Get around above ground

This is a promotional illustration created by Bonner to promote National Bike Week, the biggest nationwide cycling event in the UK. I think this is really clever as it uses the most recognised logo in London to create a really strong, clear and memorable logo of its own to advertise Bike Week, where roads were closed to cars, in order to get people out on there bikes on the streets of London. Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London was a big supporter of this campaign.

NHS anti smoking advertising

I thought this was an extremely clever design for an advert targeting parents who smoke. I think the child's handwriting really strongly conveys the innocence and vulnerability of children and how impressionable they can be. Its a really simple poster but is very effective in delivering a strong message to the parents.

Knotap

The knotap is designed by Juyoung Kim and it is designed to deliver fun and interest from an ordinary object with a message of 'saving water!'.The idea of crossing over between a knot and a water tap intuitively connotes ‘spend less’ to users in a humorous context.

Phillipe Stark

Phillipe Stark is certainly one of my favourite designers and this is one of my favourite pieces of his and one of his most famous designs. The Juicy Salif was designed by Stark in 1990 and it is not actually meant to squeeze. It is considered an icon of industrial design and it has been displayed in museums such as New York's Museum of Modern Art. Originally, it was inspired by squeezing a lemon over a squid in a seafood restaurant, but many observers think it looks like a spider. It is manufactured by Italian kitchenware company Alessi. Its diameter is 14 cm, height 29 cm, and it is made from cast and polished aluminum.

For the tenth anniversary of its launch, 10,000 were individually numbered and gold plated. There has also been a gray/black version. Both are now collector’s items, the gray/black version are particularly hard to find. The gold plated version was described as an ornament because the citric acid in a lemon discolors and erodes the gold plating. Stark is even rumored to have said, "My juicer is not meant to squeeze lemons; it is meant to start conversations".

Faces in places

Faces in Places

I love this website. Humor is very important to me and I find lots of things amusing! I am sure that this is something that everyone has done before - seen a face somewhere where its not supposed to be. Putting them all together on a website makes this very amusing and I really enjoy browsing through all the different faces, some of them are bizarre.

The Millau bridge

wow

The Millau Viaduct is an enormous cable-stayed road-bridge that spans the valley of the river Tarn near Millau in southern France. Designed by the structural engineer Michel Virlogeux and British architect Norman Foster, it is the tallest vehicular bridge in the world, with one mast's summit at 343 metres.

The bridge’s construction broke three world records:

The highest pylons in the world

The highest mast in the world

The highest road bridge deck in the world.

Intriguingly, the Millau Viaduct is not straight. A straight road could induce a sensation of floating for drivers, which a slight curve remedies. The curve is 20km in range. Moreover, the road has a light incline of 3% to improve the visibility and reassure the driver.

Banksy's cover has been blown?

Banksy isn't a fictional character. His cover has been blown. He's an actual person who makes art! . Apparently , he went to public school, he's middle class and he lives in suburbia and is called Robert Gunni

Illusions

Do these circles appear to intertwine? Believe it or not, they are actually individual circles!

MYDNA Bookcase

Joel Escalona's MYDNA Bookcase was inspired by the spiral, rotating structure of DNA.

The Dunk Mug

This mug has a compartment in the bottom for cookies or biscuits. It even comes in left- and right-handed variants, as "the slot of the Dunk cup should always face away from you when drinking so that the biscuits in the slot slide towards the back of the mug rather than onto your lap.

The Shard of Glass

Architecture is one of my favourite parts of design. I especially like modern architecture and skyscrapers, but I have never really liked England's modern architecture, which generally I think looks pretty ugly! However I am pleased to say The Shard will be a striking new addition to the London skyline, commanding panoramic views across the capital doubling the height offered from the London Eye. I really approve of The Shard and I think it looks brilliant. The Shard will become the tallest building in London. The design consists of several glass facets that incline inwards but do not meet at the top, and is inspired by the masts of ships that once anchored on the Thames. The 72-storey building contains offices, apartments, a hotel and spa, retail and restaurants and is topped by a 15-storey public viewing gallery. At an inspiring height of 306 metres (1,016 feet) and with a total 72 occupied floors reaching skyward into a breathtaking 15 story spire, the Shard London Bridge Quarter is set to be the tallest building in Western Europe. The master architect, Renzo Piano, designed the Shard as a ‘vertical city’ that includes a public piazza, world class office space, an exclusive collection of residential apartments which will be the highest residential apartments in the UK and will be serviced by Europe’s first 5-star Shangri-La Hotel, retail space, restaurants, and a public viewing gallery.

The Gullwing is back!

The New Mercedes Gullwing SlS

The original Mercedes Gullwing is one of my all-time favourite cars and it is certainly my favourite classic car. I am very excited after seeing that Mercedes are bringing it back! The Mercedes 300 SL concept was fist introduced in 1954. The original Gullwing was a road going spin off of the company's 1952 Le Mans winning racer, built at the behest of Max Hoffman, the car maker's flamboyant US importer, for sale to a showbiz crowd. Those distinctive doors were a function of the car's rigid, race-bred chassis rather than stylistic frippery.

Now 55 years later, Mercedes have brought back one of its most fascinating designs for a new supercar - the SLS. I think it looks stunning and I am relieved as the original was such an amazing looking car, the new SLS had a lot to live up to. I have actually been lucky enough to have been in one of the original Gullwings when I met someone in my gap year in California that owned one! The new SLS is due to be released in 2010 and I hope I am lucky enough to see this one to as Mercedes have done a great job of re-designing it. They have managed to create a car that is neither retro or ultra modern. It fuses some old-school details with more contemporary touches. So while the grille and side air intakes clearly reference the original 300 SL, its defiantly wide track and aggressive stance are very 2009.

I have seen this concept quite a few times on promotional bags, where the hand interacts with the image to emphasise the message. This is one of the more eye catching designs.

Weight Watchers Ambient Bus Advertising

This is one of my favourite examples of ambient media. I believe humor is very important in advertising, and personally I find funny adverts some of the most memorable, like the old John Smiths adverts. This is particularly effective because it is funny and its having a joke about overweight people, but its not offensive. I believe most people who view this advert will smile and think that its a clever way of advertising.

Ambient Security Glass Advertising

Another example of exceptional ambient media. This must be one of the most eye catching and shocking uses of ambient media. I am sure that everyone who passes it on the street will notice it and talk about it. Its extremely effective in selling the product (security glass) as it shows that the manufacturers have a lot of faith in it!

Ballet Ambient Media

I think this is a brilliant example of ambient media. Its probably one of the best that I have seen simply because its location is so perfect.
